Gifts can be presented by the bride-to-be anytime all the bridesmaids are together and have quiet moment. Gifts are also given to the junior bridesmaids and, if appropriate, the flower girl.

Often all the bridesmaids receive the same gift; with the exception of the maid of honor, who is usually given a more extravagant gift than the others since her duties exceed the other bridesmaid's. Each bridesmaid gift can also be a variation on a theme (ex. each a different color necklace) or completely different items for each bridesmaid.

Bridesmaid gifts are often jewelry to wear at the ceremony that can also be worn for years to come. But bridesmaid gifts can also include a photo album / scrapbook, spa gift certificate, or even matching gloves to wear at the wedding ceremony.

There are many opinions when it comes to the price of bridesmaid gifts. Generally gifts are purchased a month or so before the wedding, spending up to $100 per gift. Some consider the gift's price should be in alignment with the cost of the wedding; others feel the more time the bridesmaids have spent helping, the more costly the gift; and still others feel the bride-to-be should spend what she sees fit and can afford.

By giving a gift to her bridesmaids, the bride-to-be is thanking her bridesmaids for all of the time (and money) they have invested in her wedding. Bridesmaid’s gifts are her token of appreciation and friendship.

No matter what is chosen for the bridesmaid gift, enclosing a card with a handwritten note or poem makes it even more personal.

About the Author

Melissa Pearl offers affordable, designer-made pearl and crystal illusion necklaces that are perfect for bridesmaid gifts or bridal shower favors.

A Bridal Shower Invitation Should Be Attractive and Stylish!

A Bridal Shower Invitation Should Be Attractive and Stylish!

A bridal shower invitations should lay out all of the necessary information, yet still be attractive. One way to do this is to have a picture engraved on the invitation. Ask your engraver to add a small design on the inside of your invitation or wherever you have information about the reception. If, for example, an ice cream social is your theme see if there is an ice cream cone or Sundae dish they can emboss onto the paper without taking away from the main body of the invitation. Remember that subtlety is stylish; you don’t want to come across as overpowering with your theme. It may be difficult sometimes to know who to invite to the bridal shower. As a general rule, the bridal shower hostess or hostesses should invite female family members of both the bride and the groom. She should also invite close female friends of the bride and the bride's family. She may also want to invite some of the bride-to-be's co-workers. She should be sure to consult with the bride when compiling the guest list. Try to organize the people invited so some will set up the bridal shower game, someone else will set up the bridal shower favor, and so on. Not everyone invited to the wedding needs to be invited to the shower. However, those invited to the bridal shower are normally invited to the wedding.

Information needed on a Bridal Shower Invitation

The bridal shower invitation should include the name of the bride to be, the date and time of the shower, and the address and phone number of the hostess/hostesses. If you are concerned about the attendance at your bridal shower, consider including on the invitation a deadline date for the RSVP; usually about two weeks prior to the shower date.

About The Author
Notifying both the Post Office and the IRS of an address change in a timely manner can help ensure the proper delivery of any refund checks. To check the status of a tax refund, use the “Where’s My Refund” service on the IRS Web site or call the toll-free automated refund line at 1-800-829-4477. If a refund check was returned to the IRS as undeliverable, call the IRS toll-free customer service line at 1-800-829-1040 to arrange for reissuance.
SELECT THE RIGHT FORM
Choosing the right individual income tax form can help save money. Newly married taxpayers may find that they now have enough deductions to itemize on their tax returns. Deductions for money paid for medical care, mortgage interest, contributions, casualty losses and certain miscellaneous costs can reduce federal taxes. Form 1040, which is used to report all types of income, deductions and credits, is the one to use if itemizing. Forms 1040EZ and 1040A do not allow such itemization.
Taxpayers who do not receive their preferred form in the tax package sent to them during filing season may obtain the form from the IRS Web site, at a local IRS office, or by calling the toll-free Forms and Publications line at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).
CHOOSE THE BEST FILING STATUS
A person’s marital status on December 31 determines whether the person is considered married for that year. The tax law allows married couples to choose to file their federal income tax return either jointly or separately in any given year. Choosing the right filing status can help save money.
– A joint return (Married Filing Jointly) allows spouses to combine their income and to deduct combined deductions and expenses on a single tax return. Both spouses must sign the return and both are held responsible for the contents.
– With separate returns (Married Filing Separately), each spouse signs, files and is responsible for his or her own tax return. Each is taxed on his or her own income, and can take only his or her
individual deductions and credits. If one spouse itemizes deductions, the other must also.
Figuring the tax both ways can determine which filing status will result in the lowest tax – usually, it’s filing jointly. More detailed information on filing status can be found in Publication 501, “Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information,” on the IRS Web site.
XXX
EDITOR'S NOTE: Members of the news media can subscribe to IRS Tax Tips by send

Advice to newlyweds

Advice to newlyweds from the IRS

It may not be high on the list of wedding planning activities, but there are a few, simple steps that can help keep tax issues from interrupting newly-wedded bliss, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
With the June wedding season in full swing, the IRS advises the soon-to-be married and the just married to review their changing tax status. Choosing the right tax form and filing status can help save money – and even prevent problems with missing a refund check.
Among those tax-related changes that newlyweds should think about now are notification of change of name and change of address. Later, as filing season approaches, they should consider itemizing their deductions, selecting the right tax return form to use and choosing their filing status.
No one should delay the cake cutting or honeymoon because of taxes. But here are some helpful hints for later:
USE THE CORRECT NAME
Taxpayers must provide correct names and identification numbers to claim personal exemptions or the Earned Income Tax Credit on their tax returns. A taxpayer who changes his or her last name upon marrying should let the Social Security Administration know and should update his or her Social Security card so the number matches the new name. Form SS-5, “Application for a Social Security Card,” is available through the SSA Web site at www.ssa.gov or by calling toll-free 1-800-772-1213.
REPORT YOUR CHANGE OF ADDRESS
If one or both spouses are changing their address, they should notify the IRS, as well as the U.S. Postal Service, to be sure they receive any tax refunds or IRS correspondence. It’s a simple process. All they have to do is send in Form 8822, “Change of Address Form,” which is available by calling the IRS at 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676), at most local IRS offices, or on the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov . Or they can write to the IRS center where they filed their most recent return. They should include their full name, old and new addresses, SSN and signature. And they should remember to let their employers know about any changes to their name or address so they can receive their paychecks and W-2s.

Marriage Q & A

Marriage Q & A

Some questions regarding the solemnization of marriage may require legal advice. Is a marriage ceremony performed by a Notary Public of the State of Florida "legal and binding"?
A: There are many factors which determine the validity of a marriage. Assuming, though, that the Florida Notary Public is duly appointed and commissioned at the time of the ceremony, that both the bride and the groom are qualified to be joined in marriage, that the couple have obtained the required Florida marriage license, and that the marriage ceremony is performed in Florida, the marriage would be "legal and binding." Florida law will presume a marriage to be legal until otherwise shown.

Q: Does Florida require blood tests prior to the issuance of a marriage license?
A: No.

Q: Does Florida recommend any premarital counseling prior to the issuance of a marriage license?
A: Yes. During the 1998 Legislative Session, the Legislature passed the "Marriage Preparation and Preservation Act of 1998" in an effort to strengthen marriages, make stronger families, children and communities, and reduce the divorce rate. See Chapter 98-403, Laws of Florida. The Act recommends the completion of a premarital preparation course of not less than 4 hours taught by a provider who has been approved by the Clerk of the Circuit Court.

The course may be completed by personal instruction or by video/electronic instruction. Providers must furnish a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the course, which should be submitted to the Clerk's Office when applying for a marriage license. For those couples who voluntarily complete this premarital preparation course, the state offers a reduced marriage license fee and no waiting period.

Additionally, the Legislature has authorized the Family Law Section of The Florida Bar to create a handbook explaining those sections of Florida law pertaining to the rights and responsibilities of marital partners to each other and to their children, both during a marriage and upon dissolution.

NOTE: For additional information about the premarital preparation course and providers in your area, or the family law handbook, please contact the Clerk of the Circuit Court, Marriage Division, in your county.

Q: Is there a waiting period for the issuance of the marriage license?
A: Yes. Effective January 1, 1999, there is a 3-day delay in the effective date of the marriage license if the couple does not participate in a premarital preparation course meeting the requirements specified in law and whose provider is registered with the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Exceptions to the delayed effective date must be granted to non-Florida residents seeking a marriage license from the state and for individuals asserting hardship who have been granted a waiver by a county court judge.

Q: What is the county/state fee for obtaining a marriage license?
A: Florida law specifies that the marriage license fee is $88.50. For all couples who complete the premarital preparation course, there is a reduction of $32.50, making the marriage license cost $56.00 for these couples.

Q: Occasionally, when I am scheduled to perform a marriage ceremony, the bride and groom forget to bring their marriage license with them to the ceremony. What should I do in this instance?
A: The law states that the official "shall require of the parties a marriage license" before the solemnization of the marriage. That means that you should take possession of the marriage license before you perform the ceremony. Remember, you must also complete your portion and return the Marriage Record to the county for recording. If the couple forgets their marriage license or has not yet obtained a license, you may not solemnize the marriage.

Q: Is a Florida Notary Public authorized to perform a marriage ceremony outside the state, or may a Notary from another state perform a marriage ceremony in Florida?
A: No. Florida is one of only three states (the other two are South Carolina and Maine) which authorize their Notaries Public to "solemnize the rites of matrimony." A Florida Notary may perform a marriage ceremony providing the couple first obtain a marriage license from an authorized Florida official and may only perform a ceremony within the geographical boundaries of Florida. Thus, a Florida Notary may not perform a marriage ceremony in another state. Additionally, a Notary from another state, including South Carolina and Maine, may not perform a marriage ceremony in Florida. And, a Florida notary may not marry a couple who has obtained a marriage license from another state.

Q: May a Notary Public solemnize the marriage of two individuals when one party is not physically present, but participates in the ceremony via telephone or video transmission, or when one of the parties is not present and another individual represents that person in the ceremony, i.e., "marriage by proxy"?
A: No. Florida law does not allow marriage by proxy. Both parties must be physically present before the Notary Public for the solemnization of the marriage. The Notary should properly identify both parties prior to the ceremony.

Q: May I perform the marriage ceremony for a member of my family, specifically my daughter?
A: Yes. You may perform a marriage ceremony for a person who is related by blood or marriage. The prohibition against notarizing the signature of a spouse, son, daughter, mother, or father does not apply because you are not notarizing the signature of the bride and groom. You are only certifying that the couple have been joined in marriage according to the laws of the State of Florida. See Attorney General Opinion, 91-70 (1991) below.

Q: My fiance and I would like to have a special friend who lives in another state come to Florida to perform our marriage ceremony. Would that be acceptable if we have a Notary Public witness the ceremony and sign the license?
A: No. Florida law provides that only certain officials are authorized to solemnize marriage. Your friend may participate in the ceremony, for instance, by providing an inspirational message or prayer; but the vows and pronouncement should be done by an official authorized to solemnize marriage in Florida.

Q: What officials are authorized in Florida to perform a marriage ceremony?
A: Section 741.07, Florida Statutes, provides that the following persons are authorized to solemnize matrimony:

State judicial officers (judges)

Notaries Public

Retired state judicial officers

Federal judges serving in a court with jurisdiction over a part of this state

Regularly ordained ministers of the Gospel, elders, or other ordained clergy, if in good standing with his or her affiliate church or denomination

Clerks and Deputy Clerks of the Circuit Court

Designated members of the Society of Friends (Quakers)

The following officials are not authorized to perform marriage in Florida:

  State Attorneys

Judges of Compensation Claims

Administrative Law Judges

Persons in these positions are not judicial officers of this state.

Q: What fee may I charge when performing a marriage ceremony?
A: The law provides that you may charge the same fee for solemnizing matrimony as the Clerks of the Circuit Court charge for the same service. That fee is set by law and is currently $20. Many Notaries provide additional services related to the wedding, such as flowers, reception, photographer, etc., and have a right to be compensated for these services. If you charge for extras, we recommend that you provide your customers with an itemized list of charges before the wedding ceremony in order to prevent any misunderstanding about your fees.

Q: When "solemnizing the rites of matrimony," is it acceptable for the Notary Public to complete the marriage certificate without actually performing a marriage ceremony?
A: No. Completing the marriage certificate portion of the Marriage Record is not the same act as performing the marriage ceremony. Actually, the certificate is your way of certifying that you solemnized the marriage. You should not falsely certify that a ceremony was performed when, in fact, one was not.

The ceremony does not have to be in any particular form. Any form of ceremony to solemnize a marriage that the parties choose ordinarily suffices, as long as both parties agree to the marriage and make a legally binding commitment to each other. A marriage ceremony is usually performed for the sake of notoriety and certainty and must be conducted by a person authorized by law to perform the ceremony.

Q: Should I perform a marriage ceremony if it appears that the bride or groom is not mentally capable of understanding his or her actions at the time of the ceremony? What if I suspect that the bride or groom is not a willing party to the marriage? What if one of the parties appears intoxicated or under the influence of some mind/behavior- altering substance?
A: As a Notary Public, you are not expected to make a legal determination or a medical evaluation of a person's mental competency; but, you should be use your own common sense to determine that both parties are willing participants and are mentally capable of entering into the marriage at the time of the ceremony. If you have any doubt about the willingness or mental state of either party, you must refuse to solemnize the marriage.

Q: May I solemnize the marriage of a couple when one of the parties is under the age of 18?
A: Yes, providing the couple produces a valid Florida marriage license signed and sealed by the Clerk of the Circuit Court, and providing that you have no reason to suspect that the marriage license was obtained by fraud. If either or both parties are minors, parental consent is required. It is the responsibility of the bride and groom to provide the proper documentation to the Clerk's Office when they apply for the marriage license.

Q: Is a Notary Public permitted to perform a marriage ceremony for two persons of the same sex?
A: No. Florida law prohibits same-sex marriages. A Notary Public or other authorized person may not perform a marriage ceremony without a marriage license issued in accordance with the requirements set forth in Chapter 741 of the Florida Statutes. The law provides that a marriage license may not be issued unless:

both parties sign an affidavit reciting their true and correct ages,

both parties meet the age requirement or comply with the special provisions set forth for those individuals under the age of 18, and

one party is male and the other party is female.

Thus, Florida Notaries may not perform a marriage ceremony for two persons of the same sex. If you choose to participate in an unofficial ceremony "uniting" two persons of the same sex, you must not do so in your official capacity as a Notary Public of the State of Florida.

Q: I recently read educational materials from an organization which stated that, as a Notary Public, I am not allowed to refuse to perform notarial services when asked. Must I solemnize a marriage if I have a religious conviction against doing so?
A: No. You have the right to refuse to perform notary services for any number of reasons, including your own religious convictions. Of course, you should never exercise your authority in a discriminatory manner.

Q: Are witnesses required to sign the marriage certificate?
A: Although the marriage certificate has spaces for two witnesses to sign, witnesses are not specifically required by law. However, it is recommended that two witnessess, other than the Notary, sign the marriage certificate in the event that proof of the marriage ceremony is necessary in the future. Remember, though, you are not notarizing the signatures of the witnesses.

Q: May I perform a marriage ceremony in a different county than the one where the marriage license was issued?
A: Yes. A Florida marriage license is good in any county in Florida. However, after the marriage is solemnized, the license must be returned to the county that issued it for recording.

Q: May I perform a marriage ceremony while aboard a ship?
A: Yes - as long as the ship is in Florida waters at the time of the ceremony. The legal definition of "Florida waters" is somewhat complex, but is generally stated as three geographic miles from the coastline seaward on the Atlantic Ocean and nine geographic miles from the coastline seaward on the Gulf of Mexico. Determining the exact location of the ship is best left to the captain or someone qualified to make that judgment.

Many cruise ships prefer to conduct marriage ceremonies while safely docked in a Florida port. Then, the wedding party enjoys celebrating after the ship sails. Whether on a cruise ship or a private vessel, you should ensure that you are in Florida waters at the time of the marriage ceremony.

Q: May I participate in a ceremony for the renewal of marriage vows?
A: The renewal of marriage vows is not an official duty of a Notary Public. No marriage license is required because no marriage is taking place. This type of ceremony is usually done as part of a celebration of a wedding anniversary or as a recommitment by the parties to each other without any legal effect. You may participate in a renewal ceremony, but not in your official capacity as a Notary Public.

Behind the Veil: Brides, grooms and their wedding parties are frantically busy and need help fast…hey, that's your cue - Biz 101 - less traditional we

AH, THE FLOWERS. THE DRESSES. THE menu. The cake. The registry. So many things to think about when planning a wedding. With today's brides and grooms so often overwhelmed by all that goes into saying "I do," smart entrepreneurs willing to step in and relieve the stress are poised to gather some well-earned profits.

Entrepreneurs are busting out of the wedding-consultant role (although that's still a big industry) and moving into less traditional businesses. These entrepreneurs have recognized which needs aren't being met . . . and are stepping right in, starting everything from a Web site for bridesmaids to a wedding chapel in a Minnesota mall.

MaryAnne London found a need when she saw a wedding chapel in a strip mall in Detroit in 1994. "It just caught my imagination," she says. "I figured someone was going to do it in Minneapolis, and I wanted to be that somebody." She took the idea for an elegant wedding chapel to the Mall of America, which has a program to help new retailers get their businesses off the ground. They loaned her fixtures for the store, and, as she says, "they've been a real partner in the chapel-- I could not have done it without the right landlord."

New to retailing, London, 54, is a full-time marketing communications consultant--she runs the Chapel of Love on the side. But when sales started flattening out two years ago, London was ready for her next challenge: She started selling accessories and apparel for bridesmaids and flower girls-- sending sales to more than $500,000 annually for the past two years.

Add-ons are an important component of any bridal business, says Brian Lawrence, author of the self-published The Wedding Expert's Guide to Sales & Marketing and vice president of sales and marketing for Encore Studios, an invitation manufacturer in Clifton, New Jersey. "[Entrepreneurs] have to think about the constant pursuit of add-ons," Lawrence says. "Contact your existing customers and sell them more." Bridal gifts for bridesmaids and ushers are often last-minute purchases, as are unique touches for the reception, like ice carvings and little trinkets. "People want something unique and different," he continues. "If they get exposed to [a cool product], they just [might] go for it."

"Unique" was in the plans of Joanna Dreifus and Ellen Horowitz when they founded BridesmaidAid.com in 2000. The idea was birthed out of the many experiences Dreifus, 29, and Horowitz, 28, had as bridesmaids. "We realized there were all these wedding Web sites and there were [virtually] no information sources for bridesmaids," says Dreifus. And there are so many more bridesmaids [than brides]."

The pair created a Web site with advice for bridesmaids, a list of duties, suggestions for bachelorette parties, wedding city spotlights, links to wedding stores and a horror story section. Both full-time graduate students, the pair focused on generating content and building a user base. The business side--i.e., the money to be made from a site that gets over 1,000 hits daily--didn't come until recently. Now, says Dreifus, they're crafting a business plan to capitalize on the site and get revenues flowing. A segment on The Today Show and being picked as a Yahoo! site of the day have helped to generate exposure. "People want really specific information," says Dreifus. "[Wedding sites often] get caught up in the formal, flowery, syrupy side of things--[people] want specifics."

More couples are turning to the Web for wedding research and purchases, according to Lawrence. Other trends in weddings: People are marrying later in life, and wedding consultants are becoming more common among middle-class couples--not just a luxury for rich folk anymore.

Vincent S. Lipe, owner of Acquisitions Event Management Inc. in Seattle, happened upon another wedding trend: He plans weddings and commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples, in addition to traditional ceremoines. Finding most of his business through word-of-mouth, Lipe, 46, happened upon this opportunity at a millennium party he had put together for a client. "A number of the guests approached me and said, 'We understand you put this all together--do you do commitment ceremonies and same-sex wedding planning?'" recalls Lipe. "I hadn't done one, but planning a wedding is planning a wedding."

The best lesson to take away? Whatever type of wedding biz you want to commit to, serve customers the best way you know how. As entrepreneurs like Lipe can attest, referrals can make all the difference.

RELATED ARTICLE: WALKING THE AISLE ONLINE

Here's a roundup of some cool wedding information sites-and just plain interesting wedding businesses-we found on the Net:

  * The Association of Bridal Consultants (www.bridalassn.com)

  * Bridal and Party Association Ltd. Whatever your reason for wearing jewelry on your wedding day, it should complement the overall theme of the wedding, including the formality of the occasion, the design of the wedding dress, and the bridal color scheme if your jewelry includes color.

The traditional bridal jewelry ensemble consists of pearl and/or diamond earrings and necklace, often heirloom pieces (something old, something borrowed). Pearls top the list as the most popular bridal jewelry. Originally worn as a symbol of purity, pearls are understated, elegant and timeless. If you listen closely and put your ear to the ground, you can almost hear that chorus of all the Mothers of the Brides from here to Timbuktu: "Dear, you cannot go wrong with pearls." For once, Mother's mantra hits the mark.

The same holds true for diamonds. You can't go wrong with real diamonds. A rare bride can afford to be gaudy and showy with diamonds, and those who can know better. It's the blinding array of affordable simulated diamonds that leads to trouble. On your wedding day, less is always more unless you're Elizabeth Taylor. There's a fine line between a fairy tale look and gaudy. If you're not sure whether you're crossing the line, ask for help from a trusted friend or relative with an air of elegance.

If you want to wear pearls and a little flash of diamonds, the "Sweetheart" Swarovski line combines the two (something new), and offers you a choice of colors in pendants and spacers, as well as your choice of metals. Swarovski crystals and glass pearls are the finest in quality from the Czech Republic, world renowned for their crystals and semi-precious gems. Each handmade piece is customized to match the colors in your wedding. Their line also includes glass fresh water pearls. If you want to introduce a little color into your wedding jewelry, pick up a color in the bridesmaids' dresses (something blue).

Guidelines for Bridal Jewelry

Semi-formal or formal attire guidelines apply to wedding attire—the simpler the dress, the more elaborate the jewelry. You can't highlight everything, and you don't want your jewelry to compete with your gown. Intricate bridal gowns with elaborate beadwork or hand-sewn lace call for simple, elegant jewelry while unadorned bridal gowns can support jewelry with more glitter, glitz and drama.

You may hear that a white bridal gown requires silver jewelry and that an ivory bridal gown requires gold jewelry. Unless you specifically selected your bridal gown to match your engagement and wedding rings, select gold or silver jewelry according to your personal preference. You're going to find that almost everyone with whom you discuss your wedding plans has an opinion on nearly everything, usually stated as a rule.

When you select your wedding jewelry, ask yourself the following questions:

Does the jewelry fit the occasion? Is it too formal or too casual? Does the jewelry compete with your wedding dress? Does the necklace follow the curve of the neckline? For example, if your wedding gown has a round neckline, a choker follows the neckline. If your gown has a V-neck, a longer necklace follows the neckline. Does your jewelry accentuate your best features, or does it attract attention to the wrong area of your face or neckline?

Earring Options

Whether you choose studs, or dangling earrings, pearls or diamonds, the key words are delicate and elegant. If your bridal bouquet and floral displays are predominantly pastel, you can select one of the pastels for your jewelry ensemble. Pale pink pearls are stunning with a bouquet of pastel roses. Out with the rules: wear whatever makes you look and feel good.

Neckwear Options

High necklines are the only necklines that generally cannot support neckwear. The neckline is the neckwear! If you're wearing a severe neckline such as a bateau, you can wear a more dramatic necklace: a larger, dramatic pendant or a longer strand of pearls. When in doubt, a simple pearl choker complements most necklines without overpowering the gown.

Tiaras

If you elect to wear a tiara, limit the rest of your jewelry to simple stud or button earrings and understated neckwear. You chose the tiara to make a statement; let it do just that. In fact, you may want to forego a necklace when wearing a tiara so that the eye wanders up to the tiara.

When selecting your jewelry, determine which asset you want to emphasize, and use jewelry to draw attention to that asset.

Brides through the ages have accessorized with wedding jewelry to add a finishing touch to their bridal attire; however, many brides who don't wear jewelry in everyday life jump at the chance to wear it on their wedding day. Is it the special occasion or the chance to play dress-up that prompts these brides to don the unthinkable—jewelry?

information on author:

M J Plaster is a successful author who provides information on shopping online for http://www.jewelry-4-u.net/engagement-rings.htm, M J Plaster has been a commercial freelance writer for almost two decades, most recently specializing in home and garden, the low-carb lifestyle, investing, and anything that defines la dolce vita.

Tips for a lasting marriage

My parents gave me this advice about marriage. They have been married since the 1960s and are still happily married to each other.

In marriage, when an argument is about to blow up, remember that takes 2 hands to clap. When one party is angry, the other should be understanding and not argue back. The calmer party should try to listen the cry, the hurt behind the upset.

Marriage is a life long journey together. Not simply a boat you get on together and get off when it does not work out.

Look at the old couples who are still together after so many decades. Their love has matured from a passionate lust to a deep, lasting love. How did they do it?

As you go through life together, you are bound to irritate one another. Nothing is so smooth as the movies might want you to believe. Little things that never bothered you initially might start getting on your nerves. That is normal. Your spouse is not perfect. Neither are you.

Marriage is about love. Love is about acceptance. Forgiveness. A love that is deeper than a rush of passionate lust. Tolerance. Of adapting to one another.

All humans are tempted. Temptation is everywhere. Succumbing to temptation and having an affair could mean the end of a marriage, or at very least endangering it greatly. Always remember your spouse. Consciously stay faithful to protect your marriage.

While preparing for your wedding, keep in mind that this is just the first step in your future lives of love together.

info on author:

The Author is the webmaster of www.wedding-ideas.net - a site that helps you prepare for your wedding.

Vital tips on making your own wedding invitations

If you want to design and print your own wedding stationery and don't know where to start, here are a few tips that hopefully will get you on your way. If you want to know more you may like to purchase our guidebook "How To Create Perfect Wedding Stationery" which includes 38 pages of vital info for DIY'ers. It comes with software to help you get the job done easily. Visit our site at www.invitationexpress.com.au.

You should select your design before firming up your ideas on paper and cards etc. Simply because the design will largely dictate what paper and card you can use. For example;

If you have a card with a folded insert, you will not be able to use single sided papers.

If the design you choose requires a translucent or vellum paper remember to assess your printer’s capabilities, especially if you want to print onto translucents. An alternative is to have the translucent blank and overlay it onto the printed sheet.

Choose your envelopes now, or at least check out the cost. This is something so many brides overlook and the budget can take a hard knock at the last minute. Most matching envelopes are expensive - there’s no getting out of it – the best you can do is to shop around for a reasonable price. Some invitations look okay in a plain white envelope but do try to get matching ones because if you create an invitation to die for it’s going to look fairly ordinary stuffed into a plain white envelope. That is the whole point of creating your own stationery, to enable you to have exactly what you want and save money at the same time. There are some stunning new colours around at the moment which will literally spoil you for choice. Although the envelope almost always goes straight in the bin, it is the ultimate finishing touch to your creation – and first impressions can be lasting. If that is important to you then it might pay to spend the extra. It’s also a nice touch for those who will keep the invitation as a memento of your wedding.

Square invitations and non standard size invitations are considered oversize and will cost more to post. Check with your postal office regarding any extra charges, taking into account the number of overseas invitations you may have to send out.

Accessories like ribbons, seals etc., are much more economical to purchase by the roll or sheet. Never buy by the metre as you will probably pay 5 times the cost of a roll and you'll use most of it anyway. Most seals are available by the sheet, you just have to look for them. Don’t buy them individually, it will cost much more.

Be aware of the theme throughout your chosen design. If you have bows on all pieces take into consideration the number of sets you need. For example: one of my very first clients wanted gold organza bows on the invitation, reply card, place cards and the thank you cards. I produced a sample set for her which she loved. She ordered 100 sets. That meant 100 invitations, 100 reply cards, 200 place cards and 100 thank you cards. That meant 500 bows and 200 of those were tiny ones for the place cards! If you want bows that’s fine, but just be aware of the amount of work it can involve. Maybe just have them on the invitation and/or place cards. You can always enlist the help of your girlfriends and make a night of it.

If you choose to have a folded card, buy it folded where possible. It costs a little extra but cuts down on the work you need to do yourself. Scoring the card, while not difficult is quite fiddly. You only get one go at scoring the card – if it’s wrong then it’s wasted. This can be frustrating and expensive.

Place cards can be purchased individually, in pairs or threes. Don’t buy them individually cut if you are going to print directly onto the card as they may not feed well through the printer. Our software comes with placecard templates for all sizes which can be guillotined afterwards. Some placecards come with perforations for easy separation.

Making your own stationery can be fun and you will definitely save a bundle if you plan your design thoroughly BEFORE you purchase any materials. Most stationery outlets will have paper and card available by the single sheet so purchase a few of the ones you like and test them in your printer first.

The key to a smooth process is testing and planning before you decide on anything definitely. Having a set of stationery finished completely and making sure you are happy with the look and the level of difficulty involved will ensure you enjoy the experience.

Info about the author:

Claire is the owner and co-developer of Invitation Express Wedding Stationery Software, an innovative new software package designed specifically for users to create and print their own wedding stationery. The earlier you get things done the less you will have to do the week of your wedding which will allow a lot less stress. You don't want to have do a million things the day before or even the day of. This will also help with the infamous Bridezilla problem.

Try to relax

Do your best to relax the day of your wedding. Hopefully you are only doing this once and you want to enjoy it. Well that won't happen if you are stressed out.

Do things the way you and your fiance want

People will give you many suggestions of how to do things, but it really is your day. For most women, we have been planning and thinking about the day for years. More than likely, you know how you want your wedding day to be so do it that way. It will be much more enjoyable for both of you if it is what you want and not what someone else wants.

You can't please everyone

Accept the fact early that someone is going to complain about something at your wedding. However, if it is what you want it doesn't matter if anyone else likes it or not.

Delegate

Allow people to help. It doesn't have to all be done by you or your fiance. You can tell people what you want and ask them to do it. Try not to be bossy about it though or you will probably be called a Bridezilla.

Make a budget

Making a budget can really help with your stress level. If you know how much you want to spend there a lot of budget calculator type things out there. Find one that works for you.

Try to follow your budget

Budgeting for a wedding is hard. You want it to be perfect and sometimes that involves a lot of money. What I have found though is that what really matters is not how much you spent on something or having this elaborate wedding, but the ceremony itself. Honestly, I hardly remember the decorations in the ceremony but I remember the words that we said. You can still have your perfect wedding without spending a lot of money.

GO ON A HONEYMOON

Unfortunately nowadays it seems as though a lot of people are spending a ton of money on their wedding and then not taking a honeymoon. You don't necessarily have to spend a lot on your honeymoon but go somewhere. This is the first or for some people the only time you will get to spend by yourselves as husband and wife. Take advantage of that. It is a time when you can get to know each other intimately and not have all the distractions of life.

Allow mishaps

If something doesn't go exactly as planned it won't ruin your day unless you let it. Sometimes mishaps make the day more enjoyable. For instance, if you have a small child in your wedding such as a ring bearer or flower girl they might do something you didn't expect going down the aisle, but it usually is cute. If you make it a big deal, it will be, but it just accept it then it will be adorable.

  Stick to your guns

This may seem like doing things you and your fiance want to, but it's a little different. If you know what you want, do it! The best weddings I've ever been to are the ones where things are a little different and I think most of the time that requires you to stick to your guns.

Unique Beach Wedding Receptions

The most unique beach wedding reception ideas are sparked by
imagination not tradition. Never mind etiquette, tradition
and timelines. That information is outdated and stuffy. Do
what will make you and your guests happy. It is a time for
fun and celebration, not pomp and ceremony!

Long gone are the days of "assigned" seating arrangements
and cookie cutter reception programs. Everyone waiting to
be told what to do next. Yawn! Today, you can "have it your
way". No, I am not suggesting that "Burger King" host your
reception. But, you could, IF you wanted to! That's the
message.

To plan for your reception, you need first to know:

* What is your theme?
* What time of day you will be having your wedding ceremony?
* What type of atmosphere do you wish to create?

Answer those three questions and great beach wedding
reception ideas will follow.

Perhaps you will marry in a romantic sunrise ceremony
followed by a breakfast reception. How about an early
afternoon wedding followed by a beach barbeque? Plan fun
activities such as a sand castle building contest or a
volleyball game. Marry at sunset. Follow the ceremony with
a wine and cheese reception and dancing.

The size of your guest list and your budget will also help
to determine which path you take.

Buffet or food station receptions lend themselves very well
to informal beach weddings and are the most fun. They are
also cheaper! You can easily coordinate this type of
reception yourself and eliminate the added expense of a
caterer. Those special women in your family who love to cook
would be honored to assist with this project I'll bet. Heck,
knowing "Aunt Jo" and "Grandma", they will probably take
over and you won't have to worry about a thing!

Formal afternoon weddings will of course lead to the usual
"sit down" planned menus. Caterers will be necessary. The
advantage being that the whole affair will be tended to
without you lifting a finger...for a price. In order to cut
costs here, you will have to limit the menu and the guests.

So, if you have a large guest list and a limited budget,
avoid marrying late in the afternoon. Guests will be hungry
and expect the dinner reception. Instead, stick with a
breakfast, brunch or cocktail reception.

The wedding industry dictates that a reception should be
from three to five hours in length. Rubbish! A reception
should be as long as it takes for you and your guests to
enjoy each others company and have fun. It can last a
couple of hours or all day if you like.

Don't feel obligated to stretch the event out. Often, your
older guests tire easily and would like to leave before the
designated departure time anyway. If you are having a beach
side bash, consider a "come and go" atmosphere. Let people
know what time your departure will be so they can be there
to send you off.

As far as beach wedding reception ideas go, the rule of
thumb is - there is no rule of thumb! Break the mold. Do
something different, something fun, something memorable.

Whatever you and your guests will enjoy most, IS the perfect
beach wedding reception!

About the Author

Cindy English is the publisher of Beach-Wedding-Themes.com
where you will find ideas for beach wedding themes full of
fun, fantasy and romance. There are many shades of white, off-white, and candlelight. A stark white overpowers most complexions, so take time to find the most flattering shade of white or off-white. It might help to think about it in terms of what the undercasting color is: some whites are blue-based, while others are yellow or pink; some off-whites are yellow-based, while others are green or gray. Don’t overlook light pastel colors, too. A very, very pale pink might be exceptionally flattering for the bride, and in combination with lace or other ornamentation would not look like “a pink dress.” And there are beautiful shades of champagne and ecru, many of which look deliciously elegant and sophisticated.

Ensuring that the gown fits well. Although it may sound tedious if you’ve never done it before, make the gown – or at least the bodice of the gown – in muslin or any other inexpensive fabric before cutting into your beautiful fashion fabric. This provides a stress-free opportunity to see how well the pattern fits, and if the neckline and other style lines are flattering. A test garment like this (often called a mock-up) becomes your laboratory: you can easily pin out excess fabric, let out a tight seam, or change the curve of the neckline, and make the corresponding pattern changes.

If the pattern changes and the fitting process are bewildering to you, consider using the services of a professional dressmaker or custom clothier. While many professionals make custom wedding gowns, most are also happy to help you fit the mock-up and make the necessary pattern changes. Knowing that your pattern fits well will make sewing the gown even more pleasurable. Local fabric stores and your yellow pages should have names of dressmakers; or check out www.paccprofessionals.org for a listing of professional custom clothiers.

Two-piece gowns: maybe you can wear it again. Some brides love having a dress that will only be worn on that one very special day. Others – and especially people who sew – might like to get the opportunity to wear the garment again. Many gowns are too distinctly bridal to be comfortably worn in other social settings. But with some planning, there are ways to design your gown so that at least part of it can be worn again.

Two-piece gowns provide a wonderful way to achieve this goal. For example, a beautiful beaded top or bustier in a rich ecru color could easily be paired over black slacks and worn during the holidays or to a special event. Or an elegant silver silk charmeuse skirt would later look dazzling with a black sweater. Let your imagination go if this idea appeals to you – you’ll come up with many ideas once you start thinking about the color and styling of the ensemble just a little bit differently than the typical bridal image.

Choosing a flattering style. If you are unsure about what style gown looks the most flattering, do a little homework. Visit several bridal shops and special occasion dress shops and try on lots of different types of gowns. Pay attention to the style lines of the gowns as well as to the ornamentation and coloration. Trying on evening wear as well as bridal gowns will also give you an idea of the kind of necklines and style lines that are flattering.

Although a wedding gown might be a much larger sewing endeavor than you've tackled before, it can be such a stimulating and rewarding sewing experience. And who knows, once you've successfully sewn one, you might be tempted to tackle other sewing projects that you thought were out of your reach.

Sarah Veblen is a custom fashion designer and writer. Whereas women have worn wedding rings for eons, men have not. The use of rings as a symbol of everlasting love enshrined in marriage can be traced back thousands of years. But not so much for men.

It was, in fact, during the second world war that the use of wedding rings by men became more common. (Note that mens wedding rings and men’s wedding bands are interchangeable, both meaning the same thing.)

It became the custom for US soldiers going to war to publicise their marital status by the wearing of a man’s wedding ring. They were happy to make public their commitment to their wife by the wearing of a public symbol that declared that commitment to all. Given that this habit of wearing men’s wedding bands was reasonably new it was all the more creditable that these men were willing to forego the marital obscurity available to them from not wearing a ring and actively chose to make a public statement about their choice.

Men’s wedding rings have become increasingly more common since that time. Today it is probably as common for a newly married man to wear a ring as not. This may be due to several factors. The modern man may consider it his duty to choose to make the same public marital statement as his wife will. And his wife may well consider it a condition of the marriage that he do so. After all, in these days of equality, if she is prepared to make a statement then should he not do so as well?

Despite the fact that the wearing of a ring by a woman is a matter of choice, it is in fact almost obligatory due to the fact that it is so common. Many women do not even consider the possibility of not wearing one. Often, however, a man usually considers the wearing of a man wedding ring very carefully.

There are a number of issues to consider. Firstly, is he concerned about a public display of his marital status? Some men, whether rightly or wrongly, are threatened by this. Others are not in the least concerned.

Secondly whilst the wearing of jewellery by women is so common as to go unremarked that is not necessarily the case for men. For many men the wearing of mens wedding bands is just a case of being asked to wear jewellery. Men often do not feel comfortable wearing jewellery and in many cases have never done so before. Whilst some men see their wedding band as different to wearing ordinary jewellery, others feel just the same as if they were being asked to wear ear rings. “It’s just not done by men”. The author, for example, wears a man wedding band, but would never consider wearing any other form of jewellery.

And as many men have never worn any form of jewellery before they have no idea what it will feel like to have something permanently on the finger. Is it heavy? Does it rub? Silly as it may seem to women this can be of concern to some men.

(If this genuinely is of concern it is quite possible to find a cheap jewellery shop, buy the cheapest ring available and wear it for a while. See exactly what it feels like. And find out your size at the same time.)

Men’s wedding rings are, in the eyes of some men, effeminate. “Real men” don’t wear rings or jewellery at all. This is becoming less of an issue as the wearing of a man’s wedding ring becomes more common, but is still an issue with many men.

Culture is also a consideration. In many cultures the wearing of wedding rings by men would never be considered. Men must think about how their particular culture, and also their religion, would view the wearing of a wedding band.

There are also practical considerations. Many men are engaged in trades where the wearing of a man wedding band would be downright dangerous. Although unlikely it is quite possible for a ring to get caught in machinery. In some jobs a ring cannot be worn on the job, and must be removed. This can also apply to women.

Ultimately though, the wearing of a men’s ring is just one of the many choices the man will have to make once he makes the commitment to marry. And it is often a choice made by the couple together, maybe one of the first they make in conjunction about their wedding.

Which finger is the ring worn on, and why?
Generally a man’s wedding band is worn on the ring finger, the same as for women. The ring finger, for those unmarried men not familiar with the concept, is the fourth finger of the left hand. This is considered to be the finger closest to the heart.

This notion came originally from the ancient Greeks who believed that this finger had an artery which flowed straight to the heart. Whilst anatomically incorrect this makes for good fable.

So you have both decided that he will wear a men’s wedding ring!
Once the man or couple have made the decision to purchase a men’s wedding ring for him there are still choices to make. Do they want to wear a matching set? Or does he prefer that his ring looks quite different to his wife’s. It is perfectly possible for a couple to buy a ring set where the style of the rings match perfectly, or even with matching engraved messages of love.

Generally though, even where the couple are to wear a matching ring set, the two rings are different. It is more common for the man’s wedding ring to be wider than the woman’s. This is because men’s hands and women’s hands are different. A woman usually has narrower finer fingers, and so a narrower band suits her hand. A man on the other hand has wider chunkier fingers and so a wider man wedding band is more suited.

This often results in the mans ring costing more than the woman’s ring even with matching styles, as the mans ring uses more, often expensive, material.

There are many innovative styles available now. Many men prefer a simple unadorned band, however others enjoy highly decorated styles which make a loud statement. The wearing of, for example, very wide and highly adorned Celtic rings is becoming much more common.

When considering the styles of men’s wedding rings it is well worth thinking about the personality of the individual. While different men have very different personalities different rings will suit different personalities as well. A loud outgoing man, for example, can wear a loud outgoing unique men’s ring.

There are many different ring materials which also reflect the personality of the individual. Titanium or Platinum are both becoming much more popular. Whilst diamonds are not, of course, as popular with men as with women, they do make a clear statement which pleases some men who choose them. Diamond men’s rings clearly say “I can afford it” or at least the big ones do. But it can be a brave man who chooses to wear a large diamond band.

Ultimately there are no rules about choosing a man wedding band. It is up to either the man or the couple together to make a decision. Will he or won’t he. There are a variety of considerations. First, will he wear one? Once that decision is made in the affirmative then there is a whole world of choice about styles, widths, materials and the type of statement the ring makes, both for the man and the woman.

But once he has his ring on it is rare that he decides that he doesn’t like it. And even if he doesn’t, it is rare that the woman will let him take it off!

About the Author

The author is the webmaster and owner of the website www.coolmensrings.ili1.com , a website devoted solely to Men’s Wedding Rings. You'll have no trouble finding a role for candles at the wedding ceremony, at the reception, and even as part of the floral displays.

Unity Candles

Join the growing number of couples who include a unity candle as part of the wedding ceremony. Perhaps you think that unity candles are steeped in a rich history of religious tradition, or perhaps you think that unity candles are the invention of the candle makers to sell an extra candle or 10,000. Neither is the case. The exact evolution of the unity candle is uncertain, but since it began 30-40 years ago, it seems that we have that ever-lively 60s generation to thank for yet another custom that has wormed its way into modern life.

I'd like to propose my own idea of the unity candle's origin—an unlikely science experiment. You can perform this experiment yourself. Light two tapered candles, or use whatever candles you have handy. Note the height and brilliance of each flame. Now, join the two flames together and look at the single flame. The united flame is taller, stronger and brighter than the sum of the two individual flames. Isn't that what marriage is supposed to be—a single unit stronger than the sum of its parts?

The most traditional of the variations on the theme is the tall, thick white candle in the center of a candleholder surrounded on each side by a white taper. During the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom light the center unity candle with the two tapers, creating the stronger flame as a symbol of the stronger unity gained through marriage.

Beyond the traditional unity ceremony, today's weddings provide the opportunity for many variations, particularly second weddings that include children. If each partner has children, the children may light the unity candles. Sometimes, parents from each family light the unity candle. You'll want to preserve the moment in a picture, because it's unlikely you'll find this level of cooperation again.

If you carry a hand-tied bouquet, incorporate a white taper into the bouquet, and carry the taper up the aisle. The groom can hold his taper until you reach the altar, when you each place your taper into the unity candleholder to accentuate the unity theme.

If your house of worship doesn't allow unity ceremonies, conduct the ceremony at the reception right before the toast.

Candles for Your Wedding Decor

Consider candles an integral part of your floral displays to add warmth to a sterile reception hall environment. Select your candles first, and then select flowers to complement the candles. If you maintain the candle as the focal point, you'll spend a lot less money on bridal flowers.

Place a single sculptured candle by the guest book, for example. Incorporate candles into your table displays at the reception. You can actually use candle displays in place of floral displays. Consider the idea of floating candle displays at the center of each table. They're low enough to allow conversation without talking through flowers.

You're not limited to white candles. Work the candles into your color scheme: silver and gold for holiday weddings. Nor do you have to limit yourself to unadorned candles. Ribbons add a nice accent to simple candles. Select elegant candles for a formal wedding and less formal sculpted, marbled, or otherwise embellished candles for less formal weddings.

Candles as Wedding Favors

Candles always make nice gifts, and you can capitalize on this by selecting a candle for your wedding favor. A small, beautifully wrapped candle makes a wedding favor that your guests will appreciate and display at home—something to remember your special day.

However you choose to add candles to your wedding, their warm flame will add to the ambiance of an already glowing moment.

About the Author

M J Plaster is a successful author who provides information on shopping online for http://www.candles-4-u.com/unity_candles.htm and http://www.candles-4-u.com/scented_candles.htm. The average cost of a wedding today is $20,000 – $25,000, and weddings are estimated to be a $25.3 billion industry. But don’t worry if your budget cannot stretch for the most expensive custom-made gown, elegant invitation cards, or the top photographer, it doesn’t mean that your wedding will be any less unique or special than anyone else’s.

You just need a bit of guidance and a few tips to help you achieve the dream of your big day. Here are a few suggestions with tips on how to save on some of the more expensive aspects of a wedding.

Wedding Gowns

Do you really need a hand-made wedding dress with beads and diamantes? This is where the big cost is and there are several options in cutting the cost. Why not opt for a second-hand wedding dress? It’s probably only been worn once anyway and you can get a once expensive dress for half the price. Consider buying an evening gown/cocktail dress from a department store or look into renting your wedding dress for the day.

The Reception

This is where the cost of a wedding can get out of hand. The wedding reception is normally the biggest expense, but one of the easiest to cut down on costs. Statistics show that an average of 189 guests attend a wedding, this is a lot. Try and keep your guest list to a minimum, do you really need to invite family members who you have never seen for years? Instead of a three-course meal why not opt for a hot and cold buffet (even cater for yourself)? Instead of holding the reception in an expensive hotel suite or wedding reception, why not consider having it at someone’s home or a club, or even book a restaurant. Keep an open bar to a minimal and only serve beer, wine and soft drinks.
Photography

The obvious choice is to shop around for the best rates, but consider hiring a photographer for the ceremony only and ask a family member or friend to take snap photos of the reception. Or you could go one step further and ask them to take the photographs for the whole day and not bother with the expense of a photographer at all.

Invitations / Stationery

If you’re on a budget and looking for cheaper wedding stationery items, then you might like to consider print-at-home http://www.1st-for-greeting-cards.com/invitation-cards.html. There are many online stationer’s that will offer this service free of charge. You pay for the paper and envelopes, then use their software to print directly from your own PC. With sophisticated customization tools you'll be able to enter your own text and preview it before you print so as not to make any costly mistakes. Alternatively, you can buy software and do-it-yourself from your PC.

Miscellaneous

Flowers can be another great expense, but also an unnecessary one. Why not buy wholesale flowers, or pick flowers from your garden (or a friends or relatives). Buy plain gold or white gold wedding bands as these are the cheapest. Get a friend to make your wedding cake for you and opt for a smaller tier cake and it doesn’t have to be a fruit cake – try a sponge, chocolate or carrot cake! Make your favors and center-peices yourself. Accessories for these can be found at little outlet stores or online. Lastly, instead of a limousine why not rent a car or borrow a luxury car from a friend or relative?

Summary

Weddings are expensive if you want them to be. But if you want to keep money aside for a deposit on a house or a honeymoon to remember, then there are many cost cutting ideas. All you need is a little imagination, and some help from friends and family and you too can have a luxury wedding with all the trimmings.

Information about the Author:

Claire Bowes is a freelance write and owner of 1st For Greeting Cards where you will find further tips and advice on sending invitation cards and choosing your personalized stationery items.

Eight cheap honeymoon ideas for couples on a budget

Between paying for the wedding and setting up a new household, many couples find there’s not much money left in their budget for the honeymoon. But who says you have to spend a fortune to enjoy a romantic honeymoon at your dream destination? Here are eight ideas for a more affordable, yet still romantic, honeymoon.

1. Ask for the gift of a honeymoon
You can defray the cost of your honeymoon, or perhaps even cover the cost entirely, by listing it on a honeymoon gift registry. A honeymoon registry works just like a wedding registry, but instead of buying you china your wedding guests buy you a trip to China (or the honeymoon destination of your choice). Yes, your guests could just contribute cash toward your honeymoon, but giving a particular portion of the honeymoon (dinner at a fancy restaurant, or a carriage ride through the historic district of a far-off city, for example) is somehow more meaningful. You’ll find a number of honeymoon registries online; theBigDay.com and theHoneymoon.com are two of the most established.

2. Exchange homes
If you prefer to mingle with the locals rather than other tourists, look into a home exchange for your honeymoon. In a nutshell, you go stay in someone else’s house while they stay in yours. Sound risky? Maybe—but tens of thousands of people have exchanged homes since the 1950s. For an annual membership fee (usually around $50), home exchange clubs open the door to thousands of people from around the world who are interested in swapping homes. You could probably find a home exchange partner on your own, but the home exchange clubs offer tools to help the exchange goes smoothly. According to ExchangeHomes.com, a home exchange can cut your travel costs by as much as half. More importantly, though, you’ll get to live like locals, and perhaps make life-long friends.

3. Rely on the hospitality of others
Hospitality clubs can hook you up with people who are willing to host you in their private homes; the largest such club has more than 23,000 members in 148 countries. Membership is usually free, although you’re asked to provide hospitality to others (on a voluntary basis) sometime in the future. In addition to saving you money, it’s a great way to meet locals who can give you an insider’s perspective on your honeymoon destination. Other places you can look for free or reduced-cost accommodations include hostels (they’re not just for the young and single anymore) and monasteries and convents, some of which open their doors to guests for little or no charge.

4. Win a free honeymoon
"Nothing in life is free"—unless you win a free honeymoon vacation in a promotional sweepstakes or contest. Quite a few travel agencies and other companies run contests giving away honeymoon vacations as a way of promoting their services.
The odds of winning a free honeymoon may be remote, but the cost of entering is usually just the time you spend searching the web for “honeymoon contest” and filling out online entry forms.

5. Go camping
Firelight and shooting stars every night . . . breathtaking natural beauty . . . snuggling with your honey in a cocoon of zipped-together sleeping bags . . . . Yes, camping can be romantic, as long you’re well prepared and have the right equipment (warm sleeping bags, a comfortable mattress pad, and a waterproof tent are a must). Plus, it’s pretty cheap--$10 to $20 per night at most locations. It’s even cheaper if you cook your own food. You can mix a few nights of camping with a few nights in hotels to make your honeymoon more affordable. And don’t overlook the rustic (but cheap) cabins available for rent at many state and national parks. Some even offer a honeymoon cabin!

6. Travel in the off season
It may be obvious to seasoned travelers, but those with less experience may not be aware of how affordable it can be to honeymoon in the off season: basically, any time other than when most people travel to your destination. Certain destinations’ accommodation and airfare prices may be slashed by 30 percent or more during the off-season compared to the peak travel season. Traveling in the off season doesn’t necessarily mean enduring wintry weather. Fall and spring usually offer discounted rates as well.

7. Consider your airline alternatives
When booking airfare online, don’t overlook the discount airlines (Southwest, Song, jetBlue, and so on); some are not listed on the big travel portal websites, even though they might have a lower fare to your destination. Also be sure to compare rates for alternate airports within a reasonable traveling distance. You might live half an hour from a major airport, but the smaller airport a couple hours away might have substantially lower fares, perhaps saving you hundreds of dollars. Finally, be flexible about your arrival and departure dates; the major travel portals all have options to search for the cheapest flights within a range of dates. Any one of these alternatives could potentially save you hundreds of dollars.

8. Check budget travel newsletters
If you’re not picky about where you honeymoon, you can probably cash in on promotional deals offering deep discounts on airfare and lodging—if you know about them. To stay abreast of the latest offers, sign up with as many free budget travel newsletters as you can. Start by signing up with the budget travel newsletters offered by Frommers.com, About.com, and MSNBC.

Information about author:

Jerry Windley-Daoust is co-founder of the website Creative Honeymoon Ideas.
